PEACE BEGINS WITH YOU AND ME

Livstycket, in co-operation with the Swedish aid organisation, Individuell Människohjälp, on the 7-11 November 2007 in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm. ”Peace begins with you and me” is about how we all, you and I, are responsible for peace.

In November last year Livstycket, in co-operation with Individuell Människohjälp (IM), invited artists, craftsmen and women and handicrafts schools to work together with Livstyckets pupils in creating tents based on their own interpretations of “Peace begins with you and me” and in that way to interpret their thoughts on peace.
Of the 40 tents IM gave to Livstycket 12 have been decorated with symbols of peace. Musicians were assigned to create a sound installation and music around the tents.
The refugee tents are of the same type as those used as emergency homes for people who have suffered from natural catastrophes. The tents are a symbol of peace. Peace means that there is a place where one can be oneself, speak the language one wants to or not speak at all if one wants that, and dress as one wants to or feels like dressing

MESSAGE

Peace is not something which exists independently of us, nor is war.  The political leaders, policy makers and army generals who have responsibilities with respect to peace are members of our own human family, the society that we as individuals have helped create.  Peace in the world thus depends on peace in the hearts of individuals.  If we want peace in the world, we all have to take some responsibility and to begin with set about cultivating peace within ourselves.   I am happy that Livstycke and IM of Sweden are together putting on an exhibition under the slogan of "PEACE BEGINS WITH YOU AND ME".  I wish the endeavour my very best wishes.

IF I COULD BE FRANK WITH YOU
(OM JAG FÅR VARA FRANK MED DIG)

Livstycket visited Svenskt Tenn
during the period of 8th March to 2nd April 2007.

Josef Frank came to Sweden about 100 years ago. He came as a refugee carrying one bag. In this same way many people arrive in Sweden even today; driven from their countries with nothing but one single bag containing the absolute essentials, all that they manage to take with them from their homes. We sense a familiarity in Josef Frank’s imagery: flowers, birds, colours, twining vines, plants spreading their foliage, air and light. It speaks of warmth, love, happiness and faith in life. All this despite the many difficulties he was faced with in the new country, much the same as those facing today’s refugees such as the cold and darkness, language barriers, poverty and exposure and vulnerability! A similar type of imagery to that of Josef Frank’s flourishes at Livstycket. For this reason Livstycket’s exhibition at Svenskt Tenn in January 2007 was a major highlight in our activities. In the exhibition Livstycket’s cushions and fabrics could enchant and shine side by side together with Josef Frank’s patterns. Never before had so many people from Tensta visited Svenskt Tenn. We believe that Josef Frank would have liked that! The exhibition was very well attended.
